RESEARCH EXPEDITION AROUND KAMCHATKA AND THE KURIL ISLANDS “THE RING OF FIRE” IN SUMMER 2019 ON THE SAIL AND MOTOR TRIMARAN “FINVAL”.

DSC_0794.JPGайтIt will be a large scale expedition along the East Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands coast to the land of majestic volcanoes, fumaroles, and hot springs; numerous big and small islands; unique, colorful and rich nature!

«Each day of the expedition will give you something new: the never ending kaleidoscope of marvelous landscapes will be adorned with exciting and unexpected meetings with giant whales, or charming sea otters, terrible sea lions, or unpredictable bears. These surprise meetings will keep us in constant enthusiastic expectation of fresh impressions and personal discoveries!»

Participation in “The ring of fire” expedition will utterly immerse you into the world of virgin nature and will let you become absorbed into the romance of the eventful everyday life of a natural scientist and explorer. The long and extreme expedition is divided into 4 stages of different duration. You may take part in one as well as in several stages.

And we will certainly have excellent sea and river fishing during stops with tasting the caught fish!

Route length: Total length will constitute approximately 3400 km.

1 stage: approximately 1000 km.

2 stage: approximately 750 km.

3 stage: approximately 500 km.

4 stage: approximately 1100 km.

 

Expedition dates:

1 stage: June,15 — July, 6 (22 days)

2 stage: July, 8 — July, 24 (17 days)

3 stage: July, 26 — August, 6 (12 days)

4 stage: August, 7 — September, 2 (27 days)

 

What will we see?

1 stage:

– Islands: Karaginsky Island, Verkhoturov Island, Manchzhur Island, Stolbovoy Island, Kamen-Gorod Island and others;

– sea lions in the water and at the rookeries;

– sea otters (with cubs as well) in the water;

– several species of seals in the water and at the coastal rookeries;

– some whale species (most probably humpback and minke whales);

– famous Kamchatka brown bears;

– birds rookeries on the Verkhoturov Island and in other places;

– variety of marine and coastal birds species;

– many species of marine invertebrates (mussels, crabs and others) some of which we will taste;

– different fish species (also tasting them) caught by some of the expedition participants when going sport fishing;

 

Possibly:

– bright red Kamchatka foxes;

– killer whales;

– other species of terrestrial animals (moose, reindeer, marmots, sables, gophers, bighorn sheep).

 

2 stage:

– marvelous marine and mountain landscapes of the eastern coast of Kamchatka;

– landscapes with numerous active and extinct volcanoes of the Eastern mountain range;

– hot springs in Low Chazhma (with swimming in them);

– Islands: Walrus Island, Expedition Rocks, Krasheninnikov Island and others;

– some whale species (most probably humpback and minke whales);

– some whale species (most probably minke, gray and humpback whales);

– famous Kamchatka brown bears;

– birds rookeries;

– variety of marine and coastal birds species;

– different fish species (also tasting them) caught by some of the expedition participants when going sport fishing.

4 stage:

– marvelous marine and island landscapes of the Kuril Islands;

– landscapes with numerous active and extinct volcanoes some of which we will climb;

– many unique natural formations (a volcano in the lake, a volcano in the sea bay, a bay in the volcanic crater, white, black rocks and others);

– hot beaches in the volcanic manifestations areas;

– numerous Russian and Japanese military fortifications and ruins of settlements;

– archaeological monuments – Ainu settlements;

– sea lions in the water and at the rookeries;

– sea otters (with cubs as well) in the water;

– several species of seals in the water and at the coastal rookeries;

– some species of baleen and toothed cetaceans (most probably humpback whales, fin whales, minke whales, white-flanked (Dall’s) and harbour porpoises);

– brown bears;

– birds rookeries;

– variety of marine and coastal birds species;

– foxes;

– many species of marine invertebrates (mussels, crabs and others) some of which we will taste;

– different fish species (also tasting them) caught by some of the expedition participants when going sport fishing;

– Kuril bamboo thickets and a lot of endemic plants.

 

Possibly:

– fur seals in the water and at the coastal rookeries;

– killer whales.

 

Who will take interest in the expedition?

Сайти2All the stages will be exciting and interesting to a wide range of extreme travellers and wild nature lovers, bird watchers, animal photographers and landscape painters. The expedition will also be attractive to professionals – zoologists of different specializations, geographers, botanists, geologists and others. Traditionally the “Finval” Research Centre provides expedition participants with all kinds of assistance in their research work during the expedition. And certainly it will be interesting to the sea fish cuisine fans!

 

 

Expedition research program:

During the expedition we will perform a wide range of works on collection of monitoring data (distribution, numerosity, behavior, mortality, anthropogenic effect) on fauna condition of the region. We will also gather information about the flora of the region. Every participant of the expedition may help in the data collection!

 

Living conditions in the expedition:

Travelling and night stops on the trimaran with 8 sleeping accommodations. Night stops on the trimaran afloat in the protected from waves places or on the shore. There may be night stops on the trimaran in drift or at slow speed. Three hot meals daily. “Iridium” satellite phone, radio stations, 220 V inverter generator and other equipment. Different variants of field sauna regularly.

 

Warning!

All the stages of the expedition are extreme and require good health and wide experience in active travel! All the participants must take part in ship handling, provision of safe navigation and perform other works during the expedition!

 

Cuisine:

Фейсбук 1The expedition is not intended for vegetarians! Svetlana, the cook, will provide three meals daily (practically home cooking). During the expedition you will certainly taste delicacies of salmon, sea fish and various sea food, and red caviar.

 

 

 

 

You are invited to take part in the expeditions of the “Finval” Research Centre on condition of co-financing of the expedition! The arrangement fee for “THE RING OF FIRE” covers part of the expedition expenses but does not cover transport costs before and after the expedition.
